Underground fences for pets have become popular to pet owners. Underground fences or hidden fences are not actually a fence. It is a term used for a radio-signaled device used by pet owners as a containment system. Depending on the type of system, this device operates with the use of wire, installed underground or above ground that transmits a radio signal that a wire, acting as an antenna, turns into an electromagnetic wave and transmit a radio signals to a receiver collar worn by the dog. When the collar gets within range of the boundary, it emits a warning tone audible to the dog, and when the collar crosses the boundary, it emits a signal that causes a static-like shock.

This type of containment has been used in states that have a dog containment law. Pet owners cannot let their pets to wander the neighborhood freely. There are other ways to contain a pet, such as, cages, chain links and even with the use of traditional physical fence.

You can use a hidden fence to surround areas that you want to protect such as your pool or garden without having to add an unsightly fence. This system is usually acceptable with neighborhood associations that do not approve physical fences. This is also a great alternative if your do not want physical fence hindering your view of the neighborhood. This type of system is also great for indoors to keep dogs out of certain area or rooms inside your house.

Training is necessary in using this type of fence. When the dog learns to return to the yard after hearing the tone it is time for the dog to experience the physical correction give him/her a reward or praise. After about a week, try off leash training. Slowly, the dog will learn his/her boundary.
